Digital-only Euro 2012 game was ‘ahead of its time’, says EA

Next year’s FIFA World Cup tie-in could be a full game, after EA admitted that its Euro 2012 download didn’t meet expectations.

The publisher decided against building a boxed game for last year’s European Championships, and released a downloadable add-on for FIFA 12 instead.

But the firm told MCV the product didn’t get the take-up it expected and is looking at what it should do for the World Cup in 2014.

"It was a little ahead of its time quite frankly," said EA Sports EVP Andrew Wilson.

"We didn’t get the take up that we thought we would at that moment in time, although things picked up later when we lowered the price. We may have got the value proposition a little off.

"But the feedback we did get was: Guys, great idea. We glad that you tried it. You didn’t get it perfect and here are some recommendations for the future.” We have to learn from that and figure out when is the right time to do that again. I think the World Cup presents a possible opportunity to evaluate that, but we don’t have plans yet."
