Double Fine loses unannounced project, lays off a dozen staff members

Broken Age developer Double Fine has laid off 12 staff in the wake of losing a publishing deal for an announced project.

Double Fine founder Tim Schafer informed Gamasutra of the bad news regarding the San Francisco-based independent studio.

"One of our unannounced projects was unexpectedly cancelled by its publisher, forcing us to reduce our staff by 12 people,” Schafer stated.

Our remaining projects—Broken Age, Massive Chalice, and Grim Fandango Remastered, were unaffected."

The studio continues to operate as an independent developer that both self-publishes and works with external publishers on select projects. Its publishing services and development assistance for indies program Double Fine Presents remains unaffected as well.

Double Fine recently releasedCostume Quest 2and is currently working on the second part of its Kickstarter success Broken Age.
