DS passes 20 million sales in Japan

reports that according to data from Media Create Nintendo's popular handheld console the DS has now sold over 20 million units in Japan.

The original model succeeded in shifting 6 million units in the first 14 months on the market, but since the arrival of the redesigned DS Lite on February 2006 the DS has gone on to sell a further 14 million consoles in the time since.

Since hitting Japanese retail the twin-screened machine has accounted for over 50 per cent of the region's hardware sales. In addition, 84 million software units have been sold – itself accounting to 40 per cent of the entire software market, 10 per cent of which is made up of Brain Training sales alone.
