E3 2016: EA focuses on Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1, teases Star Wars and Mass Effect

EA kicked of E3 on Sunday afternoon, with a conference filled with big blockbusters, if not any real surprises.

The publisher started the event with Titanfall 2. The shooter from Respawn will arrive on October 28th this year, just a little ahead of the new Call of Duty. The game will include a single-player mode for the first time. The firm showed two trailers, one to promote the multiplayer while the other looked at the single player. The story mode will focus on the ‘relationship between the Titan and its pilot’. The full trailer for the story is right here:

Madden and FIFA 17 also received plenty of on-stage time, with both games receiving new big new game modes. FIFA 17 will introduce a story mode for the first time (called The Journey). Players will take control of Alex Hunter who is trying to make it to the top. The game now uses the Frostbite engine (as announced before) to help bolster the story element of the game.

There are a few other new additions, too. Most notable of which is the introduction of four of the Premier League’s biggest name managers – Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho. Mourinho, who has just been unveiled as the Manchester United manager, appeared on stage to engage in an actually-not-cringeworthy bit of banter with Liverpool fan and EA exec Peter Moore.

Check out the trailer for The Journey right here:

Back to the shooters, Battlefield 1 was the game that ended the show. The World War 1 title received a new trailer, but the big focus was on letting people go hands-on with the game in the EA after-show.

Those expecting some more concrete details from other big EA projects would have been left disappointed. The Mass Effect Andromeda news amounted to BioWare promising a deeper reveal later in the year, and showing a behind-the-scenes trailer. Some cut scenes were showcased during this trailer, which was greeted with excited whooping from the E3 audience. You can see what got them excited by watching the video below:

There was a lot of talk about Star Wars, too, but not a lot actually showcased. It was revealed that UK studio Criterion and Motive (led by Jade Raymond) are working on future Star Wars Battlefront content, while there were hints and tantalising snippets from Respawn’s (Titanfall developer) Star Wars title and Visceral’s action title. Respawn’s game will be set apart from the current Star Wars stories, while some of the other games will be directly linked to the new films.

However, no new game was fully detailed or revealed, and we will have to wait until next year to hear more.

This was the teaser:

Finally, and probably the best announcement from a developer stand-point, was the reveal of EA Originals and a game called Fe (trailer included below). Fe is the first game from the Originals programme, which will see the EA support smaller indie studios. The firm even pledged to give all of the game’s profits to the studio. We shall be asking EA more about that as soon as we can.
