Registration for EVO, the largest fighting game event of the year, just closed with 5,065 people signing up for the Street Fighter V tournament.
Co-founder of EVO, Joey Cuellar, tweeted out the official numbers for the event earlier today, showing that Street Fighter V has more competitors than both Super Smash Bros Wii U and Melee combined. This makes the SFV competition the largest fighting game tournament ever, and results in a whopping $100,650 prize pool.
Smash 4 ended with 2,637 entrants and Smash Melee ended with 2,350, resulting in them being the second and third most popular tournaments respectively. Lagging a fair way behind was Pokken Tournament with 1,165 signups, presumably boosted by the $20,000 prize pool bonus supplied by The Pokmon Company, and Guilty Gear Xrd was just behind with 903 signups.
Despite having the second biggest prize pool of the weekend, thanks to $50,000 from Warner, Mortal Kombat XL only managed 707 signups, narrowly being beaten by Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, which received 770 entrants. Rounding out this year's EVO line up is Tekken 7 with 543 entrants and Killer Instinct, which has a $20,000 plus prize pool, with 540 competitors.
EVO takes place in just a few weeks, between July 15th and 17th in Las Vegas.
