Final Fantasy XV ships 6m units

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy XV has shipped over 6 million units. This figure also includes the game’s digital sales figures.

The game is the fastest-selling entry in the Final Fantasy franchise to date, having experienced strong Day One sales of over 5 million units. It also broke the record for the highest number of digital Day One sales in Japan, and became the biggest selling physical and digital title in the whole of Asia following its release on November 29th.

Whether Final Fantasy XV will be able to reach 10 million sales, however, remains to be seen. In an interview Square Enix’s Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV event in March last year, this was the figure game director Hajime Tabata said the game would need to hit in order to be considered a success.

However, with the game now having slipped out of the UK Top Ten, it seems like Final Fantasy XV’s sales are slowing down. Indeed, just a week after its release in Japan, sales for the game fell by 90 per cent.

During its opening week in Japan, Final Fantasy XV went straight in at No.1, selling 716,649 units. Its launch also helped drive Japanese PS4 hardware sales, with Sony’s console showing a 227 per cent rise in sales week-on-week.

However, by the end of the month, Final Fantasy XV only sold a further 150,000 units in Japan, reaching 860,127 sales by December 25th according to data from Famitsu. It ended the year in third place on the Japanese charts, coming in behind Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sushi and Tempura and Pokmon Sun and Moon.

Sales could improve, however, as Final Fantasy XV’s Season Pass content has yet to kick in. Tabata has also announced that the game will be receiving several free updates over the course of 2017, including big changes to the game’s story starting from Chapter 13.

More recently, Square Enix released a free Holiday Pack that added festive photo frames to Prompto’s camera shots, as well as a free pass to the upcoming in-game event, the Moogle Chocobo Carnival, which starts on January 24th.
