Frontier's Elite Dangerous will soon add compatibility with a second virtual reality headset.

The space sim is already one of the few mainstream releases to already offer Oculus Rift support. Now it has been confirmed that the game will support SteamVR's HTC Vive headset at launch.

We're thrilled to announce SteamVR support as part of the ongoing expansion of Elite Dangerous,” Frontier's chief creative officer Jonny Watts said. Back in December 2013 we were among the first to support virtual reality with a triple-A game, and for me, exploring, trading and fighting throughout Elite Dangerous' 1:1 scale Milky Way remains an unequaled virtual reality experience.

We have been working closely with Valve to bring Elite Dangerous to HTC Vive, and we are delighted with the quality we have been able to achieve.”

The Elite SteamVR update will roll out some time later this year. The Vive headset itself, however, is only due to arrive this year in limited numbers, with a full rollout expected some time in 2016 – alongside hopefully PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift.
