Steam has released its usual list of best selling games for the year and there’s literally no surprise in it as out of the 12 best sellers of 2018, seven were already in the top 2017.
As usual, Steam didn’t provide specific figures or even ranks but rather ordered the titles by categories: Platinum (1st - 12th top seller), Gold (13th - 24th top seller), Silver (25th - 40th top seller) and Bronze (41st - 100th top seller). The company also divided its games into five lists: Top Sellers, Top New Releases, Top Selling VR Titles, Top Early Access Grads and Most Played Games.
In the Top Sellers, which ranks the games that had the most revenue in 2018, games-as-a-service (and free-to-play, to a certain extent) are of course the big winners, with GTA V, Rainbow Six Siege, Warframe, CS:GO, Rocket League, Dota 2 and PUBG being once again listed in the Platinum section, much like in 2017.
Most of these titles also made it to the Most Played list, with over 100,000 simultaneous players in 2018. It’s interesting (but not surprising) to see that out of the 10 titles that had over 100,000 simultaneous players in 2018, six were free-to-play – CS:GO, Realm Royale, Team Fortress 2, Warframe, Dota 2 and Path of Exile.
Going back to the Top Sellers list, new entries included Far Cry 5, Monster Hunter World and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey:
Moving on to VR, Steam revealed that over 1,000 titles launched with VR support on Steam in 2018, with more than 900 of them being VR-only. Arizona Sunshine made it to the Platinum list for the third year in a row, with very few titles in the top having actually released in 2018, apart from Beat Saber, Skyrim VR and VR Kanojo:
In the Early Access Grads category – which ranks the games that left Early Access in 2018 and is measured by gross revenue during EA and after release – Subnautica, Conan Exiles and Dead Cells made it to the Platinum list. Last but not least, the New Releases category ranks the top new games of 2018, by month - you can find them all on this page.
