George Lucas suing Jedi Mind control firm

Star Wars creator and IP owner George Lucas is suing a company called Jedi Mind Inc which manufactures a thought-controlled PC and gaming device.

The firm makes a wireless headset that is able to detect a user’s brainwaves and in turn allow them to control software applications simply by will.

Though Lucas doesn’t claim to have copyright on controlling the thoughts of the weak mined, his company LucasFilm has sent a cease-and-desist order to Jedi Mind Inc owner Brent Fouch over the use of the Star Wars terminology in his company name and products.

Lucas is seeking damages of around $5m.

Reuters adds that LucasFilm doesn’t actually own the trademark Jedi Mind, but argues that it claims dominion over all characteristics associated with the Jedi knights not memorialised in a registered trademark including Jedi robes, the lightsaber weapon, the power to levitate objects, a telepathic oneness with other Jedi and the universe, and the ability to shoot energy beams called ‘Force Lightning’ from the fingertips”.

The firm’s registered trademarks do include Jedi Knight and Jedi Training.
