GMA Hall of Fame: Tim Ingham, CVG

The CVG Online editor picked up the award for Specialist Online Writer last year. He tells MCV what it meant to him…

How did it feel to win a Games Media Award last year?

Important.

What do the GMAs mean to the games press community?
More than it will ever let on – especially in 140 characters.

Other than winning a GMA, what has been your biggest achievement to date?
The revelation that my 16-year-old self wouldn’t think I was too much of a dickhead.

Which of your competitors do your admire and why?
I love seeing TheSixthAxis making all the right moves to grow. It’s an admirable site. EuroGamer’s not always to my tastes but the consistency of its quality is inarguable.

Who’s your favourite non-games writer?
David Hepworth.

What’s the best press trip you’ve been on ?
Speak to someone who doesn’t work in games or the media and you soon learn they’re all best.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
Pay attention to criticism from your community and your colleagues. As for the rest, everybody loves you when you’re dead.

And what advice would you give to someone hoping to become a games
journalist?
Don’t pitch ideas or your CV – you’ll be lost in the white noise. Pitch completed work. Ideally, do so for free.

If you weren’t a games journalist, what would you be?
Struggling.

Who would be your Games Media Legend?
Anyone who’s ever given me a pay rise.
