Another week, another chance for me to try to make a another God of War pun as Kratos sits atop the charts, yelling 'Boy' at no one in particular.
God of War's sales have dropped 53 per cent week on week, a respectable drop that makes it the first title since 2014's release of The Last of Us Remastered to have three consecutive weeks in the top spot.
However, while Kratos may be dominating the boxed charts with his mighty Leviathan axe, its impact hasn't frozen anything, with a Top Ten with a few surprises: including Grand Theft Auto V slipping out of the Top Ten, and Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 making a surprise return, no doubt buoyed by Marvel's tentpole Avengers: Infinity War movie.
Keeping with the accidental freezing theme, Nintendo Switch re-release Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze has come in at No.2, selling so little on the Wii U that nearly the entirety of its sales for the week came for the Switch.
Nintendo's Labo has dropped out of the Top Ten, but the publisher can boast three first party titles in the Top Ten, with Donkey Kong joined by Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe. In fact, it's been a strong week for first party titles, with the aforementioned God of War and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds rounding out a Top Ten that's 50 per cent first party exclusives.
Don't expect this to change too much during May. Many of the biggest titles are first party, with Detroit: Become Human from Sony, State of Decay 2 coming from Microsoft and the Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition coming for Nintendo.
However, this week has nothing significant planned for boxed release. Perhaps we'll see a fourth week at No.1 for God of War.
Here is the boxed Top Ten for the week ending May 5th. (Data courtesy of GfK/Ukie)
