Hacker releases PS3 exploit

PS3’s days as a piracy-free platform are under threat with the news that famed hacker George Hotz has publicly released the details of the exploit he uncovered over the weekend.

Hotz had previously claimed to have found a way to gain read/write access to the console’s system memory and HV processor access. He has now gone a step further by openly publishing the details.

In the interest of openness, I’ve decided to release the exploit,” Hotz stated.

Hopefully, this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organize and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released. I have a life to get back to and can’t keep working on this all day and night.”

As it stands the exploit does not yet allow for the running of homebrew or pirated code, thanks mostly to a number of still protected encrypted security codes in a many of PS3’s core components.
