Institute of Play’s GLASS Lab aims to engage students with games

Non-profit video game organization Institute of Play has unveiled theGames, Learning and AssessmentLab, a new design center that will research and develop compelling games in an effort to engage students.

Announced today during the Aspen Ideas Festival, GLASSlab also aims to provide data on students’ comprehension of core skills needed to succeed at the collegiate level and beyond.

The lab is developed with EA and the ESA’s support, as well as $10.3m in grants combined coming from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It will be based in Redwood City, California at EA’a global headquarters.

The video game industry has experienced a transformative change over the past decade with the advent of new mobile, social and online platforms that have opened up opportunities for gaming in a number of sectors, including education,” said EA’s Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Jeff Brown. We are excited to be a founding partner of GLASS Lab and not only house the organization at our headquarters but lend our world-class IP and talent to the project.”
