Iwata dismisses iPad

It’s a bigger iPod Touch” – that’s the conclusive verdict of Nintendo president Saturo Iwata when asked for his thoughts on Apple’s new iPad by The New York Times.

There were no surprises for me,” the exec added, going on to state that he doesn’t believe the machine will pose any notable threat to the ongoing success of DS – which was yesterday confirmed as having sold 125m units worldwide.

Iwata’s comments mirror much of the scepticism that followed Apple’s iPad reveal on Wednesday night.

Elsewhere in the interview, Iwata also shrugged off the growing noise surrounding 3D display technologies – though perhaps this is not too surprising considering that nintendo is yet to take to make any moves into the booming HD sector.

‘I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home. How is that going to look to other people?”

Some industry onlookers would have you believe that consumers are going to lap up 3D technologies with the same enthusiasm as they did the HD revolution. Sony has been keen to place 3D at the forefront of its PS3 forward planning, while Microsoft has been keen to emphasize that Xbox 360 will not be left out of the revolution.
