JAPAN: Nintendo attacks DS piracy

Nintendo of Japan has filed lawsuits against five Japanese firms who have been importing and selling equipment that allows illegal games to be played on the Nintendo DS – such as the popular R4 cards.

According to Reuters, Nintendo and 54 other Japanese software companies filed the lawsuit earlier today at the Tokyo District Court.

R4 cards – along with its numerous sister products – allows gamers to circumnavigate the DS’ in-built copy protection system. The devices have received much criticism in the UK over the past few weeks, with retailers calling for a total retail ban on R4 cards.

ELSPA and Nintendo have said they are monitoring the situation in the UK.
