Journey dominates GDC Awards; Cart Life tops IGF

Both the Game Developers Choice Awards and Independent Games Festival held their ceremonies last night at GDC in San Francisco, and– to little surprise –thatgamecompany’s Journey has again hogged all the accolades.

Already a winner (or at least nominee) of every other relevant industry award out there over the past year, the PSN darling won big again. The independent studio wore a path to the podium, accepting victories in six GDCA categories – including Best Downloadable Game and Game of the Year.

Richard Hofmeier’s retail simCart Life had itself a hay day over on the indie side, taking three IGF awards including the Nuovo Award and Seamus McNally Grand Prize.

  • Best narrative: The Walking Dead
  • Best visual arts: Journey
  • Ambassador of the year award: Chris Melissinos
  • Technology award: Far Cry 3
  • Best game design: Journey
  • Best handheld/mobile game: The Room
  • Best audio: Journey
  • Pioneer award: Steve Russell
  • Best debut game: {Subset{games}}
  • Innovation award: Journey
  • Audience award: Dishonored
  • Lifetime achievement awards: Dr. Ray Muzyka, Dr. Greg Zeschuk

Independent Games Festival Awards:

  • Seamas McNally grand prize: Cart Life
  • Excellence in visuals art award: Kentucky Route Zero
  • Excellence in audio: 140
  • Excellence in narrative: Cart Life
  • Excellence in technical excellence: Little Inferno
  • Best student game: Zinith
  • Audience award: FTL
  • Excellence in design: FTL
  • Nuovo award: Cart Life
