Latest PS3 update blocks accessories

A number of third party devices have been rendered redundant following the release of Sony’s latest PS3 firmware update that, amongst other things, introduces some new security measures to combat the recent spate of PS3 piracy devices.

Specifically, it looks a number of accessories that connect to console via its USB ports have been compromised.

One firm to speak out on the matter is peripherals manufacturer MadCatz. A number of the company’s wired and wireless joypads will not work on updated machines, and there have also been reports of problems with its Guitar Hero controllers.

Over the last 24 hours, various media outlets have reported on issues gamers are experiencing after downloading and installing the new 3.50 firmware for their PS3 video game systems,” a statement from MadCatz released to FileFront reads.

Mad Catz would like to take this opportunity to put gamers’ minds at ease. With the exception of a small quantity of controllers sold before 2008, we believe that all Mad Catz products will continue to function as they did prior to the 3.50 firmware update including high profile products such as our range of Street Fighter IV FightSticks and Wireless FightPads; our range of controllers and accessories for Call of Duty; our Cyborg F.L.Y. 9 Wireless FlightStick; our wired and wireless control pads; and our range of Rock Band accessories.

Any consumer who owns a Mad Catz product and is experiencing an issue, including an issue with the PS3 Firmware update should contact Mad Catz customer services. Providing the product is within warranty, Mad Catz will be happy to offer a suitable replacement.”

Sony has stated that it is investigating the unintentional block of legitimate accessories.

UPDATE: MadCatz has been in a touch with a clarification statement.

"Mad Catz do not make Guitar hero controllers. We DO make Rock Band controllers, ALL OF WHICH STILL FUNCTION PERFECTLY after the update.

"The point of issuing a media alert was to ensure customers that only a very, very small handful of products (three so far) are not currently working after the update. All of these are no longer available to purchase in stores and any consumer who has an issue should contact us immediately.

"Every PS3 product available in stores from Mad Catz today should work fine."
