Major League Gaming sees massive viewership growth in 2012 season

Major League Gaming has reported record-breaking numbers for viewership.

Polygon reports the international esports league amassed 11.7m unique viewers online during its 2012 season–boosting viewership growth by 334 per cent.

More than 15m hours were streamed online for the period, and the organization’s spring and fall tournaments were the most-watched in its history.

MLG’s 2011 season brought in 3.5 million unique viewers online in comparison. Over the last two years, total online viewership growth rose 636 per cent. The league’s organizers believe that figure could rise even higher in 2013.

"MLG’s 334 percent growth in live online audience this year surpasses growth demonstrated by traditional sports," said MLG CEO Sundance DiGiovanni. "This is a testament to the mainstream demand for competitive gaming and power of live streaming."
