Mario misses UK top spot

Super Mario Galaxy 2 has fallen short of reaching Number One in the ELSPA GfK Chart-Track All Formats Top 40 by just 1,000 units.

Nintendo’s super sequel – released for Wii on Friday – was beaten to the top spot by Rockstar’s multiformat Red Dead Redemption.

The Wild West adventure achieved its fourth consecutive Number One this week. It has been in high demand at retail following a stock shortage.

Both Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Red Dead Redemption have been critically well received, receiving average scores of 98 and 95 on aggregator site Metacritic respectively.

The titles benefited from extensive marketing campaigns with advertisements running on radio, in cinemas and gaming magazines. Both games also received separate three-week TV campaigns.

Rockstar previously said Red Dead Redemption is its biggest UK release this year and has one of the publisher’s biggest marketing spends.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 launched at GAME in Oxford Street on the evening of Thursday June 10th. The event was hosted by Charles Martinet – the voice of Mario.
