John McAfee, the millionaire founder of McAfee Anti-Virus, is on the run from Belize police after his neighbour, Gregory Faull, was found murdered.
Faull died of a single gunshot wound to the back of the head.
The 67-year old claims to have hidden from police, who were looking to question him, by burying himself in the sand and putting a cardboard box on his head to allow himself to breathe.
He also alleges that the Belizean authorities have a vendetta against him and presumes that Faull was mistakenly killed by government authorities who mistook him for McAfee.
They will kill me if they find me,” he told Wired whilst on the run. Under no circumstances am I going to willingly talk to the police in this country.
You can say I'm paranoid about it but they will kill me, there is no question. They've been trying to get me for months. They want to silence me. I am not well liked by the prime minister. I am just a thorn in everybody's side.”
McAfee also claims that his six dogs were poisoned last Friday – dogs that Faull had previously registered a complaint about. He rejects any notion of Faull's involvement, however, instead blaming a contingent of black-suited thugs” who were allegedly dropped off at the beach by the Belizean coast guard.
Neighbours had also voiced their unease about the armed guards who patrol McAfee's property.
Belizean police have previously raided McAfee's island property after he was accused of manufacturing methamphetamine and possessing unlicensed weapons. These charges were eventually dropped.
McAfee is being treated by authorities as a prime suspect” in the murder. They also say that there is no truth” in his accusations.
