Monster Hunter World ships 5m units in its opening weekend

Capcom’s Monster Hunter World has shipped a mammoth 5m units since the game’s worldwide launch on Friday.

Usually, Monster Hunter World’s launch is staggered around the world, but with this launch Monster Hunter World has now sold faster than any other game in the franchise, but also is the best-selling game in the franchise, after just a few days.

Monster Hunter World marks the first time the series has launched on the PlayStation console in 12 years, and the first time it has ever released on an Xbox. meaning fans clamouring to play Monster Hunter on the big TV have finally got their wish. Sales are also buoyed no doubt by the critical applause the game has received, with near unanimous praise accompanying the release.

Capcom have outlined plans to support the game with a series of paid and free downloadable content, and they’re also working on a Hollywood adaptation of the franchise, which could help cement Monster Hunter in the public consciousness for console owners that perhaps haven’t encountered the mega-franchise in one of the series’ handheld iterations.
