Guild Wars 2 has claimed an impressive sales record, if publisher NCsoft is to be believed.
The company says that Guild Wars 2 ranks as the all-time fastest selling Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) in Europe and North America” with sales of 3m units in its first nine months across both territories.
After triangulating against multiple data sources, it’s clear that Guild Wars 2 is the fastest-selling Western MMO of all time based on the first nine months of availability,” DFC Intelligence analyst David Cole stated.
This puts Guild Wars 2 in an impressive position when they release in China, where we’ve seen similar franchises really take off”.
The relevance of this statistic is certainly up for debate, however.
World of Warcraft expansion Cataclysm sold 3.3m copies in its first day and 4.7m copies in its first month. Is that being discounted because it’s an expansion? The original World of Warcraft actually sold more than that in its first year, although that included Chinese sales numbers.
However you look at it, it’s hard to argue that NCsoft is not being overtly selective with this particular PR nugget.
