New 2DS XL tops Japan’s hardware charts after 30% fall in Switch sales

Nintendo’s New 2DS XL sold over 36,000 units in its first week on sale in Japan, making it the best-selling piece of hardware in last week’s charts, according to the latest figures from Famitsu.

Sales were bolstered by the release of Hey! Pikmin, which debuted at No.2 with over 79,000 copies sold. This wasn’t quite enough to beat Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, however, which topped the charts last week with over 98,000 units.

Nintendo’s Ever Oasis also put in a decent performance last week, reaching No.3 with just under 16,000 sales. This was enough to push the week before’s No.1, Bandai Namco’s Gundam Versus, down to No.4 after an 89 per cent drop in sales.

Other new entries included Konami’s 100% Pascal Sensei for 3DS, which entered the charts at No.7, and Nippon Ichi Software’s Hakoniwa Company Works for PS4, which debuted at No.10.

Over in the hardware charts, Nintendo Switch stock seems to have been snapped up after last week’s growth spurt, with sales falling by 30 per cent. Indeed, sales for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS and Breath of the Wild all took a hit last week, allowing PS4 to close the gap despite hardware sales remaining largely static week-on-week.

The New Nintendo 3DS, meanwhile, saw an unusual surge in sales, possibly off the back of Nintendo’s announcement that production of the console had now come to an end, prompting buyers to grab one while it was still available.
