In a surprise move, Ubisoft has revealed that the next Assassin's Creed game will feature a new protagonist and a new setting, and will be created by a new team.

Assassin's Creed 3 released last year and featured new hero Connor Kenway, with the game set during the American Revolution. Despite selling 12 million copies, Ubisoft plans to switch things up with a new hero and time period for the next game.

It was widely expected that the same character and setting would be fleshed out in more games, just like Assassin's Creed 2's Ezio Auditore and the Renaissance era also featured in subsequent releases, Brotherhood and Revelations.

Polygon is reporting that at an Ubisoft earnings call, however, CEO Yves Guillemot said, We are delighted and proud to announce today that in financial year '14, we will introduce an all-new Assassin's Creed hero, within an all new team and time period,” adding, "We expect it to be another major leap forward for the franchise.”

While financial year '14” could mean anything from April 2013 to March 2014, like its predecessors, this game would most likely be lined up for release during the holiday season this year.

While Guillemot didn't reveal which studio was working on the new game, he did hint that the game has been in development for a while. It is the benefit of multiple teams working on multiple chapters of the product, each getting several years to make their versions of an Assassin's Creed game.”

Assassin's Creed 3's creative director Alex Hutchinson had said in an interview that we was excited at the prospect of an Assassin's Creed game set in colonial India during the British Raj. Hutchinson had also ruled out World War II, Feudal Japan and Egypt as potential settings for the series.
