Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime said the platform holder is focused on having enough Switch stock this Christmas but couldn’t confirm it would actually be the case.
Talking at Variety’s Entertainment and Technology Summit yesterday, he was asked about the firm’s goal to sell 10m units of the Switch this fiscal year, and answered: Certainly the demand is there, and our supply chain is there.” He continued: Are we going to have enough for the holiday? That’s what we are focused on.”
Switch shortages have been an ongoing issue since launch, with retailers telling MCV back in March the stock was diminishing very quickly. UK retailers addressed the issue in MCV again earlier this month, with Games Centre MD Robert Lindsay saying the Switch had a surprisingly strong performance despite relative shortages” and GameSeek’s CEO Stephen Staley pointing out communication issues with Nintendo Europe and the UK distributors.”
Back in June, the plaftorm holder had to clarify that the Switch shortages were not strategic, with Nintendo UK then telling MCV that the Switch demand surpassed” its estimates,as GAME cited lower than expected” supply.
Nintendo sold over 2m Switch units worldwide in just a month. At the end of July, a new financial report from the firm revealed 4.7m units sold between launch on March 3rd and June 30th 2017.
