Nintendo: Great content can beat Apple

The key to winning the war of handheld devices isn’t by lowering the price of games, but by providing ‘great content’.

That’s the view of Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime after being asked by CNET how the firm can compete with cheap and free games available on the iPhone App Store.

You win with great content,” he said.

We’re fortunate to have franchises like Mario, like Zelda, like Donkey Kong. All of these great franchises really motivate consumers to buy the software, and what they’re looking for is that in-depth great experience – and that’s what we offer.”

When asked how much is at stake on the 3DS following declining sales of Wii consoles year-on-year, Fils-Aime replied: It’s important to remember that the gaming industry is cyclical. There are lots of systems sold early on, and then later on it’s driven by software.

So for us, 2008, 2009 and 2010 were fantastic software years and that’s where the profit is made.”

Nintendo has previously said it wants the 3DS to launch worldwide by March.
