Nintendo unveils new 3DS and 3DS XL

Nintendo has revealed a new design for its handheld 3DS and 3DS XL consoles during its latest Nintendo Direct announcement.

The ‘New Nintendo 3DS’ and ‘New Nintendo 3DS XL’ both feature coloured face buttons, as well as a new camera control nub above the face buttons. ZR and LR buttons, similar to those found on the Wii U Game Pad, will also be introduced.

Meanwhile, the card slots, power button and stylus holder will be moved to the bottom of the systems.

The new models will also include NFC connectivity added, meaning players can connect the upcoming Amiibo figurines to the systems.

The system’s titular 3D functionality has also been updated to work in tandem with the integrated cameras, tracking players’ heads to reduce blur when playing in 3D. The systems’ internal hardware has also been bumped up, meaning navigation and loading times will be snappier.

As well as coming in new colour schemes, the ‘New’ consoles will also support interchangeable front and rear coverplates with accompanying background themes for the 3DS’ home menu.

The new models will also feature slightly different sizes and weights to their previous versions, while the battery life for both consoles have been increased, a little bit.

The New 3DS will retail for 16,000 yen (92.78), while the New 3DS XL will go on sale for 18,800 yen (108.99).The coverplates will retail for 1,000 yen (5.79).

The new hardware and coverplates will be released in Japan on October 11th. And are due in the UK next year.
