Only 2/3 of gamers pay to play

30 per cent of today’s gamers never pay for the games they play – that’s the claim of a new report by tracking firm Newzoo.

Whether it’s the 59p iPhone app revolution or the host of free Flash games available online, a full-time gaming habit is certainly potential cheaper today than it ever has been.

But Newzoo claims that its 30 per cent figure covers the entire gaming market, with punters both playing Flash games online for free as well as restricting their console gaming to free demos that can be downloaded straight to their machines.

The thousands of ‘Lite’ (free) games on the App Store also have great appeal for iPod and iPhone owners.

The firm claims that the boom in free gaming begun around the time of the global recession but is showing no sign of letting up as financial stability slowly returns.
