OpCapita’s Comet to cut 1,000 jobs

OpCapita, the company that has tabled an offer to pay off GAME’s lenders, has put 1,000 Comet staff on notice of losing their jobs.

That represents about 30 per cent of the workforce, The Sun reports. OpCapita has already cut 450 engineer positions and put hundreds” of call centre staff on notice.

The company is undergoing a drastic cost-cutting plan as it attempts to reverse the fortunes of Comet, which it acquired last year for just 2.

"This is Comet catching up with the rest of the world. Our overhead structure is too big." Comet chairman John Clare stated. "I’m convinced we can turn this around — but there’s a lot of work to be done."

The news will prove ominous reading for GAME employees, whose future will remain very much in the balance even if a takeover is achieved.
