Platform holders pick up Japanese Call of Duty publishing duties

Publish date:

Square Enix is no longer the publisher of Call of Duty in Japan.

This year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be published by Sony on PlayStation. For Xbox, Activision will serve as publisher and Microsoft and distributor, according to Siliconera.

Sony has also published previous Activision titles in the region, including last year's Destiny, although Activision's partnership with Square Enix is more longstanding. The Final Fantasy publisher has handled a string of the company's games spanning all the way back to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

The Japanese version of Black Ops III will offer both a dubbed Japanese voice track and the original voices with subtitles. Square Enix's previous releases had separated the dub and subtitled games into two separate SKUs.

At E3 Sony revealed a marketing and DLC agreement for the Call of Duty brand, which for many years had partnered with Xbox.
