An analysis of articles published online in 2014 has shown that PlayStation enjoyed around 35 per cent more coverage than Xbox.
A report from Ico Partners' Thomas Bidaux found that the PlayStation brand as a whole was the subject of 560,573 articles while the Xbox brand received 411,380. That number was almost matched by PS4, with 400,751 articles. Xbox One received 301,132.
At the beginning of the year the gap between the two was minimal, but it increased as the year progressed.
Interestingly enough, Xbox One stands about the same level as Android or iOS,” Bidaux added. Keep in my mind that the media we track are biased towards gaming. A number of tech media are included, but in no way is this as exhaustive as the game media. Android and iOS being at the same level as the Xbox One is quite impressive.”
Nintendo is excluded from these results as a full year's worth of data was not available.
Titanfall won the battle of individual game titles, helped in no small part as it was released early in the year. Shooters were dominant, accounting for five of the top ten games, while three were open world.
Looking at MOBAs specifically, League of Legends was in a league of its own, almost doubling the number of articles written about rival Dota 2 (21,222 vs 11,069).
The numbers were compiled using a tool called Media Monitor. Bidaux admits it is not perfect”, although it does provide what appears to be reasonably comprehensive tracking of around 3,500 websites.
