PS3 outsold 360 in last 12 months

Global sales of the PS3 in the 12 months ending June 30th 2010 were about 4m units ahead of the sales enjoyed by Xbox 360.

The number-crunching over on VG247 shows that Microsoft’s machine shifted 10.3m consoles in the last financial year. This compares to 14.3m unit sales of Sony’s machine in the same period. Total PS3 sales now stand at 38.1m – just 3.6m units behind Xbox 360’s global install base of 41.7m.

In the 12 months prior to that the Xbox 360 sold 11.1m units – that’s 1.5m units head of PS3’s 9.6m unit sales.

Though Xbox 360 sales appear to be slowing, the recent arrival of the redesigned Xbox 360 S has provided a significant boost to the console’s fortunes on the High Street.

The question now is whether Microsoft’s machine can maintain enough momentum to prevent the PS3 surging ahead in the battle for second place in the console war. How big a say the arrival of both the PlayStation Move and Xbox 360 Kinect will play in that battle remains to be seen.
