Red Dead Redemption sells in 5m worldwide

Stock shortages? Take-Two this evening said it has sold 5m units of Red Dead Redemption into retail less than a month after the game’s launch.

The massive ship number was revealed as part of its second quarter results.

Sales of the game were not included in the second quarter results the firm reported today – the game launched after the quarter ended, in mid-May, so will form part of the third parter results in three months.

But already, the game’s excellent debut (it has been the UK No.1 since launch) puts the firm in a good position before those revenue numbers are detailed in September.

The firm has upwardly revised its guidance for the full year (ending October 31st) based on RDR’s success and the strong slate of other titles due over the next six months.

Strauss Zelnick, chairman of Take-Two, commented: "The successful worldwide launch of Red Dead Redemption reflects the unparalleled creative talent that is a distinguishing strength of Take-Two, and the title has set new benchmarks for quality and innovation. We are incredibly proud of our creative teams and their success in delivering some of the best interactive entertainment experiences. We have raised our outlook for 2010 to reflect these achievements."
