Resident Evil VII joins Xbox Play Anywhere programme

Microsoft gamers who pick up the latest Resident Evil title will be able to play it on both Xbox One and Windows 10. This was announced via Twitter by Xbox boss Phil Spencer (below), and makes it the first major third-party release to support Microsoft’s initiative.

So far, the only games that are currently included in the programme are Gears of War 4, ReCore, Forza Horizon 3 and Everspace, making slim pickings for Xbox One owners who also want the flexibility of playing their games on PC as well.

Other titles are set to join the programme upon their release, though, and these include Sea of Thieves, Halo Wars 2, Killer Instinct Season 3, State of Decay 2, Ark: Survival Evolved, Cuphead, We Happy Few and Crackdown 3. Scalebound was also set to be an Xbox Play Anywhere title before its cancellation.

Both Xbox Play Anywhere and Resident Evil VII were announced on-stage at E3 2016. Microsoft revealed Play Anywhere on its stage, naming the first 12 titles that supported the programme.

Microsoft claimed that all first-party titles would be part of Play Anywhere, though this turned out to be not entirely correct.

Resident Evil VII, meanwhile was announced on Sony’s stage. While the Microsoft version can be played on both Xbox One and Windows 10, the PlayStation edition supports PlayStation VR.

After rumours pointing this way, this game is a return to the franchise’s horror roots. Capcom is rather bullish about Resident Evil VII’s prospects, with its eyes on Day One sales of 4m worldwide.

Resident Evil VII launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on Tuesday January 24th.
