Retail backs away from Skyrim discounting

It could be one of the biggest releases of 2011, yet retail seems to have decided that it won’t be going to war over the price of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Even HMV is not doing its usual low-price trade-in title on the game, which has become a regular feature on the High Street in the last few weeks.

GAME, however, has announced a deal. It will be selling the title for 4.99 to anyone who trades-in a copy of either Batman: Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

The supermarkets seem to be sticking with near-RRP prices, though, with Sainsbury’s going for 36.99, Morrisons 37 and Tesco 37.97.

It remains to be seen whether we’ve seen the end of widespread discounting on games this year or whether the likes of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Super Mario 3D Land, Need for Speed: The Run, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, Zumba Fitness 2, Halo: Anniversary, Mario Kart 7, Star Wars: The Old Republic, LEGO Harry Potter and Saints Row 3 will be too much for retail to resist.
