Six years and two billion downloads later, Angry Birds gets a proper sequel

Although it may not feel like it, mobile behemoth Angry Birds has never been granted a full follow-up.

There have been 14 different spin-offs to Rovio’s feathered phenomenon since it launched back in 2009, including Star Wars, Transformers, Rio, Space, Seasons and Stella.

But there’s never been an official sequel – until now.

That’s right: Angry Birds 2 has been confirmed by Rovio. Although details are slight – the reveal merely says that the game will be ‘bigger, badder and birdier’ – it’s set for a full unveiling later this month, at an event in San Francisco, on July 28th.

The original Angry Birds arguably defined the mobile games market, toting up more than two billion downloads, inspiring countless clones and spiritual successors, and even earning itself a mention by British Prime Minister David Cameron, who admitted that he was ‘addicted’ to the game and had finished every level in 2012.
