Sega has confirmed Sonic Dash, an endless runner-style game starring the iconic sprinting hedgehog, is in the works for mobile.
Rumblings of the potential dream marriage between Sonic and the genre made famous by Temple Run began earlier this week, when the title was mentioned on a handful of (since revised) LinkedIn listings from Hardlight – Sega's UK-based studio.
Sega, in a refreshing move, has since confirmed the existence of the title to Kotaku:
"At this time, Sega is able to confirm that we are working on a new mobile game titled Sonic Dash. We have not announced any specific details on the product but we will be releasing additional information on this exciting, new game in the near future."
We'll have to wait to find out if mobile means iOS, Android, or both; as well as whether or not the game will follow the genre/platform norm of being offered as a free download with in-app purchases.
It may sound like high hopes given Sonic's well documented woes following the glory days of the franchise, but this genuinely sounds like something that would satisfy on multiple levels – if it's done well.
