Sonic the Hedgehog live action movie confirms Jim Carrey

Veteran comedy actor Jim Carrey will take on the role of Dr Robotnik in the upcoming live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie, as had been rumoured a while. The titular blue one who has to go fast will be played by Ben Schwartz.

Carrey confirmed his role as Doctor Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour. Commenting on how the eggy antagonist will be brought to live, Carrey (probably) joked: “Magic! Mixed with desperation.”

Scwhartz’s involvement was confirmed by an article on Variety, with the voiceover artist/actor taking a voice-only role in the movie. Previous credits include vocal work on the recent DuckTales reboot, as well as the voice of Star Wars’ BB-8.

Sonic the Hedgehog (the movie) was originally in the works at Sony Pictures before the rights lapsed and were picked up on by Paramount this past October. Since then the project has been picking up steam – and talent – with Jeff Fowler directing, and Deadpool director Tim Miller in the executive producer role.

There are few details about the movie as of yet – it will be a mix of live action and CG, and follows the classic buddy cop format with Sonic teaming up with a cop to tackle Robotnik. The movie is set for release November 19, 2019 – and so far all that’s been seen of it has been an image of the Green Hill Zone set.

Other on-screen talent so far for the live action Sonic movie includes the likes of James Marsden (playing the aforementioned lawman) and Tika Sumpter.
