Elements of Evolution's PS4 racer Driveclub have had to twice be completely rewritten in the run-up to today's expected launch of the free PS Plus Edition.

Sony announced yesterday that the subscriber-only version of the racer will go live today (June 25th), eight months after the initial launch date. Remember, too, that the game itself was around a year late in the first place, having initially been planned as a PS4 launch title.

We are very embarrassed and we are sorry for that,” Sony studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told Kotaku of the game's calamitous launch last year. It's just the number of people the server couldn't handle. The stress-testing was not designed correctly. So it was the oversight.

So the team had to go back to the drawing board in terms of server code. And they have been re-factoring and re-engineering server-side to be able to have more people play the game at the same time.”

Sony said prior to the game's release last year that the developer had already once gone back to the drawing board” in its effort to get the game onto the console in the first place.

Yoshida added that Sony now has a new central tech team” tasked with reviewing the multiplayer code of first party titles, stating: We are more stringent in terms of doing proper online beta testing to get more people to play. We went through a new kind of process.”
