Sony's next-gen PS4 console will not require a constant internet connection for users to access its features, Sony's worldwide Studios president has said.

Speaking toEurogamer, Shuhei Yoshida said that despite a vast array of social, cross-platform and cloud streaming features, users will stay be able to play their PS4 offline if they want to.

Yoshida also stated however that users may want to keep the console connected if possible, as the console's subsystems will be able to download or upload content while the user is away.

"You can play offline, but you may want to keep it connected," he said.

"The system has the low-power mode - I don't know the official term - that the main system is shut down but the subsystem is awake. Downloading or updating or you can wake it up using either the tablet, smartphone or PS Vita."

He added: "Oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don't want to connect to anyone else, you can do that."

The news comes as Microsoft's next Xbox isrumoured to require a constant internet connectionto operate properly, although the console giant has yet to officially reveal any details of its next-gen hardware.
