Square Enix issues statement on closure of India operations

Square Enix has issued a statement in response to our report on the closure of its mobile game publishing operations in India.

As we reported earlier, Square Enix ceased its India operations this month, laying off all six employees at its Mumbai office in the process. That included Square Enix India ex-vice president Atul Vibhandik, who had confirmed the layoffs and the closure to us.

In a statement subsequently released to the media, Square Enix responded with the following:

"We have made a long-term commitment to serving the Indian market, and it means there always will be a possibility that we make necessary changes in the strategy from time to time in order to take the best strategic option. It is true that we are considerably reducing the size of our Mumbai office, however, it does not mean we will withdraw from India."

Square Enix India was set up a year ago, and its team was working with developers across the country with a view to creating mobile games for the India market. The Mumbai operations ceased without single game being released, or even green-lit, by Square Enix’s Japan headquarters.
