Square Enix opens India office; to create mobile games for local market

Japanese developer/publisher Square Enix has opened its first India office in Mumbai.

Atul Vibhandik heads the company’s India operations and takes on the role ofvice president at Square Enix India.

The India office currently comprises of only 4-5 employees, however the company does plan to expand over the coming months.

For now, the publisher plans to partner with Indian developers to create mobile games catering to the local market. While the company hasn’t announced any such partnerships just yet, it plans to release at least a couple of games this year.

The Square Enix India website has also gone live, and while there isn’t much there just yet, the careers section does have one job listing for an associate producer.

Square Enix entered India last year with the Square Enix Game Development Contest, which ran through most of last year and saw entries from several studios and independent developers across India.

Distribution and marketing for Square Enix’s console and PC games will not fall under the purview of the India office, the company’s honorary chairmanYasuhiro Fukushima told MCV last year, and will instead focus entirely on mobile game development.
