Swatter sentenced to one year in prison

Wethersfield, Connecticut resident Matthew Tollis has been sentenced to serve a 12-month jail sentence after being convicted for his involvement in multiple Swatting hoaxes.

FoxCTreports Tollis was found to have participated in six Swatting calls – including one directed at the University of Connecticut that resulted in a campus-wide shut down.

According to the report, Tollis acted as a local agent” for a team of UK-based hackers. The 22 year-old would obtain phone numbers and other information for the hackers to make the calls. The Boston Convention Exhibition Center and several US schools were among those he gathered info on.

Swatting is not a schoolboy prank, it’s a federal crime,” US Attorney Dierdre Daly said. These hoaxes have expended critical law enforcement resources and caused severe emotional distress for thousands of victims.”

A Federal Judge has ordered Tollis to report to prison on November 5thto serve for one year and one day.”
