Telltale’s Batman will introduce online multiplayer

Batman: The Telltale Series will bring with it the studio’s first stab at adding multiplayer to its successful narrative game design model.

Shacknews reports that the game will introduce a new mode called Crowd Play. Although not formally announced as of yet, it was shown off over the weekend at Comic Con in the US.

Telltale said it had been pondering such a move for a while. Essentially it takes the decision making process popularised by its games and widens the net, with users able to allow friends or possibly even larger audiences (2,000+ was the number mentioned) to collectively make key decisions.

The idea is based on the many times the studio has observed crowds gathering around its titles to make suggestions and observations about the best course of action at key decision points.

Batman, as well as all future Telltale games, will at the start give players the option of activating Crowd Play. Saying yes generates a URL that can be shared with others, who can then chip in via any browser based device.

Two modes will be available – one gives ultimate power to the crowd while the other ensures the player always has the final say. Observers will also be able to give the thumbs up or down to any decisions made along the way, the results of which will be offered to players at the conclusion.

Batman: The Telltale Series will be released digitally on August 2nd and physically on September 16th.
