The Witcher is becoming a Netflix TV series

Cult book turned video game mega hit The Witcher is to be turned into a TV series and released via Netflix.

The streaming video giant will develop and produce the show, on which Witcher creator and author Andrzej Sapkowski will serve as creative consultant.

Sean Daniel and Jason Brown, who worked on fellow Netflix series The Expanse, have been named as executive producers. Polish production and special effects company Platige Image will also direct at least one episode a season.

CD Projekt, which took the IP and transformed it into one of the world’s most successful RPG series, is not involved.

Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar,” Netflix VP of international series Erik Barmack said. We couldn’t be more excited about bringing [it to] Netflix members around the world.

Sapkowski added: I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing. I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”

And the Browns had this to say: The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”

Let’s not leave out Platige Image’s Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko: "There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.”
