Update: A new tweet from the official Ubisoft account has announced that Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will be formally unveiled on 4th March.

We will be announcing all the details of Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag on Monday March 4 at 6pm CET,” said the tweet.

In India, 6 pm CET translates to 10:30 pm IST.

Judging by box art released by Ubisoft, the game will be released on Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii U, with the PS3 once again receiving 60 minutes of exclusive bonus content.

The tweet was accompanied by the first piece of artwork (below), which shows the new blonde-haired protagonist seemingly aboard a pirate ship.

Original story: A leaked image showing a promotional poster has revealed the title of the next Assassin's Creed game.

As announced by Ubisoft, the new game will be the next numbered iteration in the franchise, and as revealed in the poster, it will be called Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

The poster shows the new protagonist in the recognisable assassin robes fighting off what appear to be pirates on a ship, with a pistol in one hand and a knife in the other.

Ubisoft is scheduled to hold an Assassin's Creed event in the UK today, and we'd assume that's where the new game will be unveiled to the press.

Kotaku, who first published the image online, has been told by its sources that the poster will be put up in stores on 4th March, so it's likely that Ubisoft will officially reveal the game before that.

The new game, as revealed by a map on the back of the poster, will be set in the Carribbean. The map shows the Bahamas, Jamaica, Cuba, as well as a part of Florida in the US.

Ubisoft has announced that the new game will feature a new setting and new protagonist, and that it will not be developed by Ubisoft Montreal - the studio that's currently hard at work on Watch Dogs.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will release in the next financial year; the October-November 2013 window seems most likely. It's unclear whether the game will be available on current or next-gen platforms, or both.
