UPDATED: Wii U sales double year-on-year

Sales of the Wii U in the half year ending September hit 1.12m – over double the 460k sold in the same period the year before.

Wii U software sales grew from 6.3m units to 9.4m units.

Lifetime sales of the Wii U, which Nintendo describes as enjoying improved sales momentum”, now stand at 7.29m, which places it behind the PS4’s 10m+ but possibly ahead of Microsoft’s unconfirmed Xbox One sales number.

The news for 3DS isn’t so bright, with sales of the console in decline over the last six months. H2 sales hit 2.09m units, which is down from the 3.89m sold in H1 last year.Lifetime 3DS hardware sales now stand at 45.42m units.

Financially, net sales declines increased, falling 12.8 per cent year-on-year for the six months ending September 2013 to 171,399m. Operating loss fell from 23,278m last year to 215m.

Net income grew from 600m to 14,300m.

UPDATE: Some financial data, unit data and unit sales period data has been altered as per Nintendo’s official report. Outlets such as the BBCand The Verge are reporting that Nintendo has posted a profit for its second quarter, but the official report covers the six months ending September. GameSpot’s Rob Crossley highlighted the disparity on Twitter.
