US: Sony delays PlayStation Rewards

New consumer loyalty program PlayStation Rewards will not launch in the US next month as planned and may possibly never see the light of day.

The scheme, which was announced for the American market last year, had been designed to reward PS3 owners for a range of activities including playing certain games, rating titles, downloading specific content of taking part in Home events. Prizes were to conclude free digital content and even real-world gifts.

It had been due to go live next month.

"We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your participation in the PlayStation Rewards Beta, which is ending on March 31st," an email to participants read.

"Your feedback helped us understand the kinds of things that make you feel appreciated and valued. Based on what we learned, we have decided the program is not ready to roll out to the public in April as originally planned.

"But rest assured, we will continue to thank loyal and devoted customers like you with innovative offerings."

Microsoft launched its own Xbox Live Rewards plan at the end of last year.
