VIDEO: LEGO Dimensions dated, IPs confirmed

Warner has moved swiftly following the LEGO Dimensions leak to announce the first official details about the game.

The game, which represents Warner and LEGO’s first foray into the toys-to-life genre, is due out on September 29th and will be released on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U.

Brands confirmed to star include DC/Batman, The Lord of the Rings, Back to the Future, The LEGO Movie and LEGO Ninjago – with more to follow in the coming months.

The earlier leak confirmed that the launch SKU will include the game and a LEGO Toy Pad (akin to Skylanders’ Portal of power, which uses NFC to communicate with the toys). Also in the pack will be three figures – Batman, Gandalf (Lord of the Rings) and Wyldstyle (The LEGO Movie) – as well as a LEGO Batmobile and some LEGO Gateway building bricks.

It’s already up for pre-order on Amazon for a beefy 100. Expansion packs including a figure and vehicle are currently priced at 14.99and 29.99.

At Amazon’s current prices, buying the game on a next-gen console and one each of every announced expansion will at launch cost 353.41.

As is the way with the genre, players will be encouraged to expand their game by buying physical expansion packs. These will include Level Packs, Team Packs and Fun Packs, some of which will be based on known IP.

Examples include the Back to the Future Level Pack, complete with a LEGO Marty McFly figure, two DC Comics Fun Packs with Wonder Woman and Cyborg figures, three The Lord of the Rings Fun Packs featuring Gollum, Gimli and Legolas, a The Wizard of Oz Fun Pack with a LEGO Wicked Witch of the West and four The LEGO Movie Fun packs offering Emmet, Bad Cop, Benny and Unikitty characters.

When kids play with LEGO bricks, they build beyond the singular brands, intermixing all of their favourite characters and universes, and we have come up with a way for players to experience that in games,” TT Games founder Jon Burton said.

Now for the first time in a videogame, LEGO fans can play in the virtual world and in the real world – combining everything without restrictions. Imagine putting LEGO Gollum from The Lord of the Rings behind the wheel of the LEGO Delorean in New Ninjago City – the creative play is endless.”

LEGO’s VP of digital games Niels Jrgensen added: LEGO Dimensions is unlike anything that we have ever done. It further extends the LEGO play experience into the digital world with all of the characters, humour and action of LEGO videogames now combined with the fun of LEGO minifigure and model building.”
