Cecil: Beneath a Steel Sky iPhone betters original

Speaking at a BAFTA panel on the remake of classic adventure game Beneath a Steel Sky for iPhone, Revolution Software’s renowned game designer Charles Cecil has revealed that he believes the iPhone version betters the original.

Speaking at the ‘Re-inventing a gamin classic’ panel, part of BAFTA’s Access All Areas initiative, Cecil told Develop: “It’s down to the touch screen.

"It’s better than what a mouse offered, which was less immediate. The barriers have disappeared. Now it is all about feeling the screen, and really, it’s even about feeling the gameplay itself," he added.

Beneath a Steel Sky was originally created by Cecil and Gibbons and released 1994, when it quickly became established as a cult classic. To this day it remains a bastion of the adventure genre.

Due on Apple’s App Store this Friday, the game will be priced at £2.99, and features new artwork by Watchmen co-creator Dave Gibbons. The re-mastered edition also includes revised gameplay, and a hint system to ease in players with tastes rooted in the casual sector.
